A little foray into the art of photography for this poster design! We had a great time shooting it, and the actresses loved wearing their actual wedding dresses again! Here’s the press release for the play by the Weird Sisters Women’s Theater Collective:

Lord, what fools these mortals be!

Austin’s favorite all-woman troupe is back for their seventh annual production, keeping Shakespeare weird with a modern rendition of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Austin Lovers Hermia and Lysandra long to don their wedding dresses and make a lifetime commitment to one another, but Hermia’s father Egeus implores Republican governor Theseus to throw the book at the same-sex couple to make room for his preferred son-in-law Demetrius, who is in turn lusted after by the lovely and lovelorn Helena.

The four skip town, seeking solace in the hill country woods, but even their high quality R.E.I. gear can’t keep them safe from the machinations of the meddling Puck and the fairy courts of Oberon and Titania. Join the Weird Sisters Women’s Theater Collective from August 18-21 and 25-27 in this whimsically relevant take on one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies.

The Weird Sisters, Austin’s favorite all-woman theater troupe, are proud to be performing an original work by one of their founding members, Susan Gayle Todd. The Weirds’ sixth annual production features New York’s Azure Osborne-Lee as Sycorax, a healer of Algiers who rises to prominence through her arts – and through her relationship with the enigmatic spirit, Ariel. When a catastrophic storm destroys Algiers, Sycorax is blamed. Stripped of her power and her lover, she is cast out and later marooned to become the “witch” of the isle from Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

A play by Ann-Marie MacDonald, directed by Susan Gayle Todd

AUSTIN, TX—June 18, 2009—The Weird Sisters Women’s Theater Collective performs Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) beginning July 23 at Austin’s own Cathedral of Junk. The play will run through Saturday, August 1.

Austin’s favorite all-woman troupe’s fifth annual production features veteran actress Chris Humphrey as Constance Ledbelly, a quivering academic with heretical ideas about Shakespeare’s revered Othello and Romeo and Juliet. When she finds herself warped into the worlds of the plays, Constance must gird her trembling loins—with a little help from Desdemona and Juliet.

Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet) is a Velveeta-nibbling, Coors-beer-swilling, hilariously irreverent look at Shakespeare’s classics.

Tickets will be sold on a sliding scale (pay what you can) of $5 to $20 (cash and checks at the door). Performances at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday.

Poster Design: Merry Wives of Windsor

This poster was designed for a production of Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor produced by the Weird Sister’s Women’s Theater Collective. For this production (a labor of love, of course) I created the poster and program design as well as a slide show of late 1950′s Texas (our play was set in a fictional Windsor, Texas) images including found family photos, advertising and magazine covers.

I also designed a poster that appeared as part of the set announcing the appearance of a slightly Elvissy Fallstaff and his Rascals.
